About
Hurricane Campground is one of the best kept secrets in southwest Virginia, offering a peaceful mountain setting along Hurricane Branch and Comers Creek. Located in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, the campground sits at elevations between 2,800 and 3,050 feet, nestled among colorful rhododendron and shaded by mixed woods of oak and hemlock. The campground features 30 campsites, including both standard and tent-only sites, as well as double sites for larger groups. Most sites include paved parking spurs, graveled tent pads, picnic tables, lantern posts, and fire grills. Two bathhouses provide flush toilets and warm showers. While only two miles off State Highway 16, the setting feels remote and offers a rustic camping experience. Note that the campground is not recommended for large RVs due to access road turn ratios, with a 30-foot length limit for vehicles and trailers. From the campground, hikers can easily access the Appalachian Trail within half a mile, as well as the popular Hurricane Knob Trail, a 1.1-mile loop that parallels Hurricane Creek, crosses two wooden bridges, and ascends to picturesque Hurricane Knob. Hurricane and Comers creeks are stocked with trout and offer excellent fishing opportunities. The campground also features groomed grassy fields for games and family activities. Some sites remain closed due to Hurricane Helene damage.
