About

Located in the Blue Ridge highlands of southwest Virginia, Grayson Highlands State Park sits near Mount Rogers, the state's highest peak. The park offers two reservable picnic shelters in the historic homestead area, surrounded by recreated log cabins and a spring house. At elevations exceeding 4,900 feet, visitors experience cooler mountain temperatures and stunning alpine-like scenery. The park is famous for its wild ponies that roam freely across Wilburn Ridge and provides access to the Appalachian Trail and over 25 miles of hiking trails. While the main Hickory Ridge Campground is undergoing extensive renovation through May 2026, the park remains open for day use with picnic facilities, trails, and a visitor center showcasing mountain life and local history.
