About
Chestnut Hollow Horse Campground serves as the equestrian hub of Grayson Highlands State Park, situated in Virginia's highest elevations near Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain. The campground features 23 sites with 50-amp electric and water hookups designed to accommodate horse trailers up to 40 feet. The facility includes an impressive stable complex with 67 stalls in three configurations: 20 wide covered stalls (8x10 feet), 19 standard open stalls (5x8 feet), and 5 wide open stalls (8x10 feet). Each stall reservation includes park-provided sawdust, though campers must bring their own hay bags and water buckets. The campground includes a bathhouse and dump station. The location provides direct access to more than nine miles of bridle trails within the park, which connect to extensive trail systems in the adjacent Jefferson National Forest and the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail. All campsites are dirt and gravel with picnic tables, grills, and fire rings. Virginia state law requires visitors to carry a negative Coggins report for each horse. While equestrian campers receive priority booking, the campground opens to all campers 30 days before arrival. During primitive camping season (March, April, and November), this area serves as the park's only camping option, though amenities are limited to pit toilets with no water.
