About
Located at over 4,300 feet elevation in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, Hickory Ridge Campground at Grayson Highlands State Park provides access to some of the most spectacular highland scenery in the Southeast. The campground sits near Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain, Virginia's two highest peaks, offering alpine-like vistas and cool mountain temperatures even in summer. The campground features a mix of sites with 20/30-amp electric and water hookups for RVs up to 40 feet, as well as standard tent sites. All sites include picnic tables and fire rings. Modern amenities include flush toilets and hot showers in bathhouses. The park is renowned for its wild pony herd that roams the highland balds, accessible via trails from the campground. Hikers can reach the Appalachian Trail, explore rhododendron-lined streams with native trout, and discover world-class bouldering areas. The park's high elevation creates a unique ecosystem with spruce-fir forests and open balds more typical of New England than Virginia. Nearly 10 miles of wild trout streams flow through the park, and over 13 miles of hiking trails lead to waterfalls, overlooks, and backcountry access. The Virginia Highlands Horse Trail and extensive bridle paths make this a premier equestrian destination as well.
