Grayson Highlands State Park encompasses 4,822 acres in Virginia's Blue Ridge highlands, providing one of the most unique camping experiences in the Mid-Atlantic. The park's signature attraction is its herd of wild ponies that roam the high-elevation balds and meadows. Campers regularly encounter these friendly animals on trails leading from the campground to Wilburn Ridge and the Mount Rogers area. The Hickory Ridge Campground offers both electric/water hookup sites and standard tent sites spread across wooded loops. Each site includes a picnic table, grill, and fire ring. A central bathhouse provides flush toilets and hot showers. The campground underwent extensive renovations from late 2024 through spring 2026, upgrading facilities throughout. A camp store near the campground sells supplies and souvenirs. Nearly 10 miles of wild trout streams flow through the park, and the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail makes this a premier equestrian destination. Chestnut Hollow Equestrian Campground separately accommodates horse camping with stables and trailer hookups.

Directions

From I-81 at Exit 45 in Marion, turn south on Route 16 and travel 24 miles to US 58 in Volney. Turn right onto US 58 and travel eight miles to the park entrance.
