Grayson Highlands State Park Hickory Ridge Campground

Closed — Closed for renovations from November 2024 through April 2026. Expected to reopen May 1, 2026. The park remains open for day use, and primitive camping is available at the stable area campground during March, April, and November when open.

Hickory Ridge Campground sits within Grayson Highlands State Park near Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain, Virginia's two highest peaks. The campground features 36 electric and water sites suitable for RVs up to 40 feet, 28 standard non-hookup sites, four yurts, and a camping lodge. Sites are wooded with dirt and gravel pads, picnic tables, fire rings, and grills. The upper loop bathhouse includes universally accessible facilities. During the regular season, full services including bathhouses and potable water are available. The campground provides access to over 13 hiking trails, including connections to the Appalachian Trail, where visitors frequently encounter the park's famous wild ponies on the highland balds. Alpine-like vistas above 5,000 feet and Virginia's premier bouldering opportunities are nearby.

Directions

From I-81 at Exit 45 in Marion, turn south on Route 16 and travel 24 miles to US 58 in Volney. Turn right onto US 58 and travel 8 miles to the park entrance. From I-77, take Hillsville Exit 14 to US 58, travel west 40 miles to Volney, turn left to stay on US 58, and go 8 miles to the park entrance.
