About

The Horse Stalls Campground at Grayson Highlands State Park is a specialized equestrian facility situated in Virginia's scenic high country near Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain. The campground features a total of 67 horse stalls including 20 covered stalls (approximately 8x10 feet) with sawdust provided by the park, 19 open stalls (5x8 feet), and 5 wide open stalls (8x10 feet). Campers must bring their own hay bags and water buckets for horses. The facility includes 23 campsites with 50-amp electric and water hookups designed to accommodate horse trailers up to 40 feet, along with a dump station and bathhouse. More than nine miles of bridle paths wind through the park, connecting to extensive trails in Jefferson National Forest and providing year-round access to the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail and the Appalachian Trail. The park sits at elevations ranging from 3,698 feet at the entrance to over 5,000 feet in the highlands, offering stunning mountain vistas and cool summer temperatures. All campsites feature picnic tables and grills, with a maximum of six campers per site. State law requires visitors to carry a copy of a negative Coggins report for each horse. The location is remote from the park's main campgrounds, providing a dedicated space for equestrian activities.
