About

Grayson Highlands State Park Backpack Parking Campground is a designated overnight parking facility for backpackers accessing the high country trails of Mount Rogers National Recreation Area and the Appalachian Trail. Located near Massie Gap at over 4,500 feet elevation, this parking area serves as a gateway to Virginia's most spectacular alpine-like terrain, including wild pony herds and panoramic mountain views. Reservations are required and include only a parking space, not a campsite within the park. Camping is prohibited within Grayson Highlands State Park boundaries; backpackers must hike onto adjacent U.S. Forest Service land to set up camp. This system protects the sensitive highland ecosystem while ensuring hikers have guaranteed parking access. The backpack parking lot was established with a reservation requirement in October 2019 to address overcrowding and resource impacts in the popular Massie Gap area. The park sits between Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain, Virginia's two highest peaks, offering access to premier alpine hiking. When the lot is full, alternative parking is available at Elk Garden or Fox Creek parking areas within Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, or hikers can arrange private shuttle services.
