About

Fort McAllister State Historic Site sits on the banks of the Ogeechee River in coastal Georgia, home to the best-preserved Confederate earthwork fortification from the Civil War. The campground occupies a shaded peninsula along tidal Redbird Creek, with sites nestled among massive live oaks and palmettos typical of Georgia's Low Country. The park offers 65 tent, trailer, and RV campsites with electric and water hookups, plus seven stilted cottages overlooking the salt marsh and two backcountry sites requiring a 1.5-mile hike. Each campsite includes a fire ring or grill and picnic table. Modern bathhouses provide flush toilets and hot showers, and the campground includes a dump station and laundry facilities. Beyond camping, the park features a boat ramp and fishing dock on Redbird Creek, nature trails through maritime forest, and the historic fort itself with interpretive exhibits in the on-site museum. The Ogeechee River system offers excellent fishing for redfish, flounder, and sea trout. The park's location 10 miles east of I-95 makes it accessible while maintaining the peaceful character of coastal Georgia.
