About

Yankee Paradise Wilderness Campsite is one of three designated wilderness camping areas in Cumberland Island National Seashore, located in the remote northern section of the island. The campsite sits 7.5 miles north of the Sea Camp dock, requiring a substantial backpacking trek along the Parallel and Yankee Paradise trails through maritime forest and coastal ecosystems. As a true wilderness experience, this site offers no developed amenities or facilities. Campers must be completely self-sufficient and prepared for primitive conditions. Water is available from a nearby well at Plum Orchard but must be treated before consumption. All food and trash must be stored or hung to protect against raccoons and other wildlife. The site accommodates up to 6 people per permit, with a maximum stay of 7 consecutive nights. Access to Cumberland Island is only by passenger ferry from St. Marys, Georgia, or by private boat. The island has no stores, restaurants, or services beyond water fountains and restrooms at developed areas. Campers are responsible for backpacking all gear from the dock to the campsite, as wheeled devices are prohibited north of Sea Camp. The wilderness area north of Stafford Beach closes periodically from October through January for managed hunts. Cumberland Island's pristine beaches, maritime forests of live oak and pine, salt marshes, and abundant wildlife including wild horses, deer, alligators, and migratory birds make this challenging trek worthwhile for experienced backcountry campers.
