About

Yankee Paradise Wilderness Campsite sits in the designated wilderness area of Cumberland Island National Seashore, offering a true backcountry experience on Georgia's largest barrier island. The campsite is nestled among live oaks, longleaf pines, and saw palmettos, providing a remote escape from the more accessible areas of the island. With only 4 individual sites available, solitude is virtually guaranteed. Reaching Yankee Paradise requires a 7.5-mile hike from the Sea Camp dock where the public ferry arrives. No wheeled carts, bicycles, or coolers are permitted in the wilderness area, so all gear must be backpacked. Campers arriving by private boat or kayak may find Plum Orchard Dock more convenient. The site has no amenities whatsoever: no toilets, no potable water, and no picnic tables. Water from nearby wells must be treated before drinking. Human waste must be buried in catholes at least 70 paces from camp and water sources. Fires are strictly prohibited throughout the wilderness area, though portable camp stoves are allowed for cooking. All food and trash must be hung to protect from raccoons and other wildlife. Reservations through Recreation.gov are required and can be made up to 6 months in advance. Wilderness camping permits cost $9 per night for up to 6 people. The wilderness areas close during managed hunts from October through January.

Directions

Cumberland Island is accessible only by boat. Take the Cumberland Island ferry from St. Marys, Georgia (101 Wheeler St) to Sea Camp dock, then hike 7.5 miles north via the Parallel and Yankee Paradise trails. Private boaters and kayakers may use Plum Orchard Dock for closer access to the campsite.
