About

Fort Morris State Historic Site sits on 66 acres of coastal Georgia marshland in Liberty County, preserving the earthwork fortifications where American forces twice defended against British attacks during the Revolutionary War. The site commemorates the colonial port of Sunbury, once a thriving rival to Savannah that has since vanished. The Pioneer Campsite offers a back-to-basics group camping experience for up to 35 people. The tent-only site features one Adirondack shelter, a shared fire ring, and three benches in a common area. There is no potable water or electricity at the campsite, so campers must bring all supplies. The site sits near tidal marshes and may become soggy during extreme high tides. Beyond camping, visitors can tour the earthwork fort, browse exhibits in the museum (staffed Friday through Sunday), and walk the nature trail. The park loans binoculars and field guides for birding, with species including painted buntings, wood storks, pileated woodpeckers, and great egrets frequenting the marsh habitat.
