About
Hickory Hill Wilderness Campsite sits deep within Cumberland Island National Seashore's federally designated wilderness on Georgia's largest barrier island. The campsite lies 5.5 miles north of the Sea Camp dock where the public ferry lands, requiring a substantial hike through maritime forest, salt marsh, and historic sites. For those arriving by private boat, the Plum Orchard dock provides closer access. This is true backcountry camping with no developed amenities. The four designated sites accommodate up to six campers each. Water is available from a nearby well but must be treated before drinking. Campers must hang all food and trash to protect against raccoons and pack out everything they bring in. Fires are prohibited throughout the wilderness area, though camp stoves are permitted for cooking. Reservations are required and available through Recreation.gov up to six months in advance. Permits cost $9 per night. The stay limit is seven consecutive nights. Only service animals are allowed. Access to Cumberland Island requires a ferry ticket purchased separately through the official concessioner, or arrival by private boat or kayak.
Directions
Cumberland Island is accessible only by boat. Take the public ferry from St. Marys, Georgia, departing from the mainland Visitor Center at 101 Wheeler St. All ferry passengers disembark at the Sea Camp dock. From there, hike 5.5 miles north via the Parallel Trail to reach Hickory Hill. Private boaters can dock at Plum Orchard, which is closer to the campsite. Carts and wheeled coolers are not permitted north of Sea Camp.
