Forestville Mystery Cave State Park Main Campground sits in a heavily wooded area near the Root River in southeast Minnesota's scenic bluff country. The campground offers 128 campsites with modern amenities during peak season. The park's signature attraction is Mystery Cave, the state's longest cave system stretching 13 miles underground with stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone formations, and underground pools accessible via guided tours. Above ground, the park encompasses 3,170 acres with three blue-ribbon trout streams: Canfield Creek, Forestville Creek, and the South Branch of the Root River. Miles of trails wind through hardwood forests for hiking, horseback riding, and winter cross-country skiing. The park also includes Historic Forestville, a living history village operated by the Minnesota Historical Society that recreates life in 1899. The campground is noted for its tree canopy coverage and lack of mosquitoes, though raccoons are common. During peak season, flush toilets and showers are available in the campground; off-season campers use facilities at the park office. The park also features a separate horse campground and five year-round camper cabins.

Directions

From Preston, MN, take MN Highway 16 west for approximately 4 miles. Turn south onto County Road 5 and continue for about 4 miles. Then, turn east onto County Road 118 and follow the signs to the park entrance.
