Located in Minnesota's Driftless Area, Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park Main Campground sits within a landscape of deep valleys, cold streams, and limestone bluffs that escaped glaciation. The 73-site campground is divided between non-electric sites (1-50) and electric sites (51-73), all landscaped with native vegetation providing privacy and wildlife habitat. Paved access loops lead to modern restrooms with flush toilets and individual shower rooms. The park's dual identity offers both above-ground and underground experiences. Three designated trout streams draw anglers seeking brown trout, while over 16 miles of trails traverse ridgetops and stream valleys for hiking and horseback riding. Below ground, Mystery Cave extends over 13 miles, making it Minnesota's longest cave system. Guided tours run from May through October, showcasing formations, fossils, and underground pools. Note that white-nose syndrome fungus has been confirmed in the cave, requiring visitors to walk across decontamination mats. Historic Forestville, a restored 1899 village within the park, operates during summer months with costumed interpreters demonstrating period life. The campground's summer interpretive programs take place at the amphitheater on weekends.
