About
Forest Lake Dispersed Area provides a true backcountry camping experience in Utah County within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Located in the Pleasant Grove Ranger District above American Fork Canyon, the area offers dispersed camping opportunities near Forest Lake, a scenic alpine destination surrounded by aspen groves and mountain meadows. Access is challenging and requires high-clearance 4WD or ATV. From I-15 Alpine Exit 284, travel east on Highway 92 approximately 7 miles to the mouth of American Fork Canyon, continue on the Alpine Scenic Loop to the North Fork junction, turn left onto Highway 144 to Tibble Fork Reservoir, then proceed northeast on a dirt road for approximately 4.6 miles past the reservoir. Forest Lake is reached via Schaffer Fork, which begins just before Dutchman Flat. The route requires fording the American Fork River. As dispersed camping, there are no developed amenities. Campers must be fully self-sufficient, bringing all water and packing out all trash. The area is popular with OHV users and connects to Ridge Trail #157.
