DUTCHMAN FLAT DISPERSED AREA

Closed — Closed for winter due to gate closure on November 30, 2025. The area typically reopens in late spring or early summer depending on snow conditions and road access.

About

Dutchman Flat Dispersed Area is located in the upper reaches of American Fork Canyon in Utah County, within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. This primitive dispersed camping area sits in the valley of Dutchman Flat, which was historically the location of Forest City, a 19th-century mining ghost town. The area offers backcountry camping opportunities in a mountainous alpine setting surrounded by the Wasatch Range. As a dispersed camping area, Dutchman Flat does not have developed facilities or amenities. Campers must be self-sufficient and practice Leave No Trace principles. The area is accessible via forest roads that may require high-clearance or 4WD vehicles depending on conditions. The location provides a more remote and primitive camping experience compared to developed campgrounds in the forest. Due to its elevation and location in American Fork Canyon, the area is subject to seasonal closures when winter gates close, typically from late November through late spring or early summer depending on snow conditions. The surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking, exploring historic sites, fishing in nearby streams, and enjoying the scenic mountain environment of the Wasatch Range.

Directions
