The shelter is closed for overnight use until November 15. Overnight stays are permitted from November 15 through April 30 only, with a maximum capacity of 4 persons and 3-night stay limit. The shelter cannot be reserved and must be shared with other visitors.
Alcohol Prohibitions
This Order describes acts that are prohibited upon lands, roads and trails within the National Forest System administered by the Forest Service Pacific Northwest Region in regards to alcoholic beverages.

This Order prohibits 1) possessing, storing, or transporting any aquatic invasive animal species AND 2) prohibits possessing, storing, or transporting any aquatic or riparian invasive plant species - on National Forest System lands in the Pacific Northwest Region as specified in the Order.

South Maxwell Snow Shelter is a primitive backcountry warming shelter situated in the Santiam winter recreation area of Willamette National Forest near Santiam Junction, Oregon. The shelter serves as a destination for cross-country skiers and snowshoers exploring the 25 miles of trails accessible from Maxwell Sno-Park, which sits at 3,800 feet elevation. The shelter is accessed by skiing or snowshoeing from Maxwell Sno-Park through trail intersections #1 or #7. There is no vehicle access to the shelter itself. The structure features a wood stove for heating, a gravel floor, and notably has no door. Overnight capacity is limited to 4 persons maximum. This is a true backcountry experience with no amenities. No drinking water or restrooms are available. Visitors must pack out all garbage and human waste following Leave No Trace principles. The shelter cannot be reserved and must be shared with other users. Candles are prohibited; visitors should bring their own lighting. Firewood may be used only in the wood stove. An Oregon Sno-Park permit is required for parking at Maxwell Sno-Park from November 1 through April 30.
Directions
From Detroit, Oregon, travel east on Highway 22 for 29 miles to Maxwell Sno-Park on the left (3.5 miles west of Santiam Junction). From the parking lot, ski or snowshoe through trail intersections #1 or #7 to reach the shelter.
