About
Mountain View Snow Shelter is a rustic backcountry warming shelter located in the Willamette National Forest, accessible from Maxwell Sno-Park via cross-country ski or snowshoe trails. The shelter provides a welcome refuge for winter recreationists exploring the area's extensive trail network, which includes routes to Birthday Lakes, Pothole Meadows, Fuji Mountain, and Island Lakes. On clear days, visitors are rewarded with spectacular views of Mount Washington, North Sister, and Three Finger Jack. The shelter features a wood stove with firewood provided, a sleeping loft, and a wood picnic table on a gravel floor. No potable water or restroom facilities are available, and visitors must pack out all garbage and human waste. Candles are prohibited; bring your own lights. The shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations accepted, and all users must share the space. Maximum overnight capacity is 15 persons with a 3-night stay limit. Overnight visitors should park at Maxwell Sno-Park rather than Big Meadows, as vehicles at Big Meadows risk being temporarily plowed in during heavy snowfall. A valid Oregon Sno-Park permit is required for parking during the winter season.
Directions
From Santiam Junction on Highway 22, travel 3.5 miles west to Maxwell Sno-Park. The shelter is accessed via ski or snowshoe trails from the sno-park. Overnight visitors should use Maxwell Sno-Park parking rather than Big Meadows to avoid being plowed in during heavy snowfall.
