About
Elk Lake Campground is an older-style small hillside campground situated on the north end of Elk Lake along the scenic Cascade Lakes National Scenic Byway in the Deschutes National Forest. At an elevation where magnificent views of South Sister, Mt. Bachelor, and other Cascade peaks are visible, this campground provides access to a variety of mountain recreation opportunities. The campground features a boat launch within the facility, though parking is extremely limited. Both motorized and non-motorized boating are allowed on Elk Lake, providing opportunities for fishing, swimming, windsurfing, and water skiing. The Elk-Devils Trail offers hiking and horseback riding along a historic route connecting Elk Lake to the Wickiup Plains Trail near Devils Lake. The surrounding area includes wetlands, diverse forests, and rocky slopes that provide habitat for shorebirds, porcupine, deer, bats, and occasional black bears. Facilities include vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings with grills at each site. A hand pump provides drinking water when the campground is operational. Swimming areas are closed to animals. The campground accommodates RVs and trailers up to 36 feet in maximum site spur length, making it accessible for a range of camping setups along this popular scenic byway.
