About

Cave Lake Campground sits at the edge of Cave Lake in the Warner Mountain Ranger District of Modoc National Forest. This is a true backcountry destination with minimal development and light use, perfect for campers who value solitude over amenities. The lake offers fishing opportunities and allows non-motorized boats via a gravel boat ramp on the south shore. Facilities are basic: two vault toilets and metal fire rings at sites. There is no potable water, so campers must bring an adequate supply. Garbage service is not provided, and all trash, fish guts, and pet waste must be packed out. Dogs are welcome but must remain on leash. Access requires driving 7 miles on County Road 2 from Highway 395. The road is extremely rough, and 4-wheel drive is recommended. This remote access contributes to the campground's peaceful character but limits suitability for large RVs or trailers.

Directions

From Lakeview, Oregon: Head south 14 miles on US Highway 395 into California to County Road 2. Turn east on County Road 2 and continue 7 miles to the campground. From Alturas, California: Travel north on US Highway 395 approximately 38 miles to County Road 2, then east 7 miles to the campground. The road is extremely rough; 4WD recommended.
