About
Cottonwoods River Camp is a primitive boat-in or hike-in campsite situated along the Green River within the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area on the Ashley National Forest. Located 8.75 miles downstream from Flaming Gorge Dam and 1.55 miles below Little Hole on the north side of the river, this remote site offers an authentic backcountry experience in a high desert environment. The campsite is equipped with one picnic table, one fire ring with benches, two tent pads, and a portable toilet screen. Natural shade is provided by cottonwood, juniper, and ponderosa pine trees. A vault toilet is available near the campsite. Campers must bring their own water as no potable water is available, and all campers are required to have a portable toilet system. The site can be accessed by floating from either Spillway or Little Hole boat launches, or by hiking from Little Hole. The Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam is world-famous for its excellent fishing for rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout, glassy clear water, and scenic red canyon cliffs. Section B of the river, where this campsite is located, is more remote with limited access, allowing healthy brown trout populations to thrive. The area offers spectacular river-running opportunities through breathtaking canyon scenery that explorers like John Wesley Powell once traversed.
Directions
From Vernal, Utah, take US Highway 191 north 45 miles. From Little Hole, float or hike 1.55 miles downstream to the campsite on the north side of the river.
