About

Cats Paw River Camp is one of 17 boat-in campsites along the Green River's Section B, located below the world-famous Section A stretch beneath Flaming Gorge Dam. This remote campsite sits on the river's left side, 8.42 miles from Spillway Launch and 1.22 miles from Little Hole Launch, making it one of the first sites accessible after leaving Little Hole. Unlike some downstream camps, Cats Paw can also be reached on foot via an unofficial trail. The campsite is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring with benches, multiple tent pads, and a portable toilet blind. The setting is quintessential high desert river camping, with shade provided by cottonwood trees, ponderosa pines, and juniper. The Green River in this section offers exceptional fishing for rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout, with healthy brown trout populations thriving in this less-accessed stretch. Vault toilets are available near Cottonwood Camp and Red Creek Camp. Reservations are required and can be made through Recreation.gov. Campers must bring their own water as no potable water is available. The Forest Service requires portable toilet systems for all campers, and a Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area pass is required. Boaters must carry required safety equipment including bail bucket, throw line, extra oar, and life jackets. No motors are allowed on this section of river.

Directions

From Vernal, Utah, take U.S. Highway 191 north for 45 miles. Cross the Flaming Gorge Dam and turn right on the road leading to Spillway Boat Ramp, or continue to Dutch John and turn right on Little Hole Road for about 6 miles to Little Hole Launch. The campsite is 8.42 miles downriver from Spillway Launch or 1.22 miles downriver from Little Hole Launch, on river left, and is accessible by boat or foot.
