About
Chinquapin Group Campground is located at the historic site of Camp Oregon Caves, a Civilian Conservation Corps camp that housed over 200 men from 1933 to 1941 who worked on projects throughout the Siskiyou National Forest and Oregon Caves National Monument. The only remaining structure from that era is the historic Grayback Ranger Station, built around 1936, which stands adjacent to the campground. A large Port-Orford cedar tree near the parking area was designated Oregon's 56th State Heritage Tree in 2011, serving as a living memorial to the CCC legacy. The campground's expansive meadow makes it an ideal venue for group gatherings including reunions, church camps, school field trips, and scouting events, accommodating up to 75 people. Water, picnic tables, and fire rings are available at three locations throughout the campground. Within walking distance, visitors can enjoy swimming in Grayback Creek and explore creek-side trails through meadows and marshes that offer spring wildflowers, wildlife viewing, and seasonal berry picking. The Grayback Interpretive Trail #1204 runs along the creek adjacent to the campground. The site is located 10 miles west of Oregon Caves National Monument, one of the world's few marble caves.
Directions
From Cave Junction, travel east on Highway 46 (Oregon Caves Highway) for approximately 10.5 miles. The campground is located behind Cedar Guard Station, a quarter mile past Grayback Campground. Access is through a locked gate immediately to the right of Cedar Guard Station. Gate combination provided with reservation confirmation.
