Chinquapin Group Campground

About

Chinquapin Group Campground occupies the historic site of the Camp Oregon Caves Civilian Conservation Corps camp, which operated from 1933 to 1941 and housed over 200 men working on projects in Siskiyou National Forest and Oregon Caves National Monument. The adjacent Grayback Ranger Station, built by CCC crews around 1936, remains as a tangible link to this history. A large Port-Orford cedar near the parking area was dedicated in 2011 as Oregon's 56th State Heritage Tree. The campground's expansive meadow makes it well-suited for group events. Water, picnic tables, and fire rings are distributed across three areas, and a vault toilet is located at the back of the parking area. There is no electricity. Trash must be packed out or disposed of at nearby Grayback Campground across the road. Grayback Creek runs adjacent to the property, offering swimming holes and access to the Grayback Interpretive Trail. Oregon Caves National Monument is a 10-mile drive east on Highway 46, featuring one of the few marble caves in the world.

Directions

From Cave Junction, take Highway 46 east toward Oregon Caves National Monument for approximately 10.5 miles. Just past Grayback Campground on the left, look for Cedar Guard Station. Chinquapin Group Campground is behind Cedar Guard Station, accessed through the gate immediately to the right (east) of the station.
