Bolan Lake Campground

Bolan Lake Campground offers a serene alpine camping experience on the shores of 12-acre Bolan Lake, nestled high above the Illinois Valley in southern Oregon's Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. The campground features 12 sites dispersed among towering conifers that provide welcome shade during summer months. Each site comes equipped with a picnic table and fire pit. Two vault toilets serve the campground, but campers must bring their own drinking water and pack out all trash. The campground serves as the trailhead for Bolan Lake Trail #1245, which climbs approximately 2 miles to the historic Bolan Peak fire lookout at 6,242 feet elevation. The lookout itself is available for overnight rental through Recreation.gov. Early summer brings exceptional wildflower displays to this high-elevation area. Nearby trails access the Red Buttes Wilderness and Tannen Lakes. Access requires navigating roughly 24 miles of progressively narrower roads from Cave Junction, with the final 8 miles on Forest Roads 4812 and 4812-040. The remote location and primitive facilities make this campground best suited for tent campers and those seeking solitude away from developed recreation areas.

Directions

From Cave Junction, OR, travel south on Highway 199 about 1 mile to Rockydale Road (first left after crossing the river). Travel south to the end of Rockydale Road (about 7 miles), then turn left on Waldo/Happy Camp Road. Head east on Happy Camp Road about 13 miles to Forest Road 4812, then take FR 4812 about 4.1 miles to the junction with Forest Road 4812-040. The campground is about 4 miles further.
