About

Bolan Mountain Lookout stands as a testament to community dedication and Forest Service partnership, having risen from the ashes of the 2020 Slater Fire through a 2024 reconstruction effort by the Siskiyou Mountain Club. The current structure mirrors the original 1954 design but incorporates modern fire-resistant materials. Perched at elevation with sheer drop-offs on all sides, the 14x14-foot glass-walled cabin offers unparalleled views of the Red Buttes and Kalmiopsis Wilderness areas, Preston Peak, and the Illinois River Valley. On clear days, Mount Shasta is visible to the southeast and the Pacific Ocean surf to the west. The lookout is a primitive rental requiring guests to be self-sufficient. There is no potable water, electricity, or trash service. Visitors must bring their own camp stove, sleeping bags, light source, cooking gear, toilet paper, and pack out all trash. The cabin includes a fold-out bed with pad (converts from single to twin configuration), a table, two chairs, fire extinguisher, and cleaning supplies. A vault toilet is located nearby. Access requires navigating Forest Service roads from Cave Junction, with a high-clearance 4WD/AWD vehicle recommended. The final approach uses a gated road with a combination lock provided to reservation holders. Reaching the lookout requires climbing 30 to 40 steep, uneven steps, making it unsuitable for families with young children or those with mobility limitations. Bolan Lake, a 12-acre high mountain lake stocked with trout, is accessible via the Bolan Lake Trail for day hiking, fishing, or swimming.
