About
Dead Horse Campground is a small, rustic campground situated on the northern slope of the Uinta Mountains in Uinta County, Wyoming, at an elevation of 8,490 feet. This remote campground features just 4 individual campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. A vault toilet is available on-site. The campground is surrounded by a sparse forest of lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, and aspen trees, which provide limited shade. Summer wildflowers and grasses add color to the landscape, and the area is home to diverse wildlife including moose and deer.
The campground's primary draw is its location adjacent to the Deadhorse Trailhead, which provides direct access to the Deadhorse OHV trail system. This makes it an ideal base camp for ATV enthusiasts. The trails are also open for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Visitors should note that no water is available at the campground, so bringing adequate drinking water is essential. The campground is accessed via Wyoming State Highway 410 south from Mountain View, then continuing on Uinta County Road 283 and Forest Service Road 072.
Directions
From Mountain View, Wyoming, take Wyoming State Highway 410 south approximately 8 miles. Where the highway makes a sharp right turn to the west, continue straight onto Uinta County Road 283 (gravel) and follow to Forest Service Road 072. Continue on Forest Service Road 072 to the campground.
