Chevelon Canyon Lake Campground is a primitive, no-fee camping area located deep in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest at 6,800 feet elevation. The campground is situated in a scenic mixture of ponderosa pine, juniper, and pinyon pine, offering spectacular views of Chevelon Canyon and opportunities for fishing and hiking. The campground features several undeveloped campsites with fire rings and picnic tables. A 3/4 mile trail provides access to Chevelon Canyon Lake via a steady descent, though there is no vehicle access to the lake itself. Boating is permitted with motors 8 HP or less. This is a pack-it-in, pack-it-out area with no trash collection, and visitors must camp only in designated sites. Access to the campground requires traveling remote forest roads, including the challenging Forest Road 169B, which requires a high-clearance vehicle. The access roads are not cleared in winter, and during periods of heavy snow, the campground may be inaccessible. The campground is generally open year-round when roads are passable, operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and has a 14-day stay limit.

Directions

From Winslow: Travel 25 miles south on Forest Road 34 to Forest Road 504, continue south on 504 to Forest Road 169. Follow 169 to 169B, then east (left) to the campground. From the south: Proceed north on Forest Road 300 to 169, continue north on 169 to 169B, turn east (right) and follow 169B to campground. High-clearance vehicle required for Forest Road 169B.
