About
Butte Lake Stock Corral sits at 6,100 feet elevation in the northeastern section of Lassen Volcanic National Park, offering a remote base camp for equestrians exploring this volcanic landscape. The facility features two adjacent metal corrals equipped with water troughs and spigots, designed specifically for horses, mules, burros, and llamas. The site is within walking distance of Butte Lake, where rocky lava shores create striking scenery for paddlers and anglers pursuing trout. The area is dominated by Ponderosa pines and surrounded by soft volcanic soils characteristic of Lassen's unique geology. Multiple horse-friendly trails radiate from the corrals, including routes to Snag Lake, the Cluster Lakes loop, and longer trails to Juniper Lake and Summit Lake. The Pacific Crest Trail can be accessed from nearby Butte Lake and runs through the park. The Caribou Wilderness, managed by the Forest Service, offers additional stock-suitable trails accessible via the Widow Lake trail directly from the park. This facility is located 45 minutes from the main park road via a six-mile gravel access road. The surrounding landscape showcases the park's volcanic history, situated at the junction of the Cascade Mountains, Sierra Nevada, and Great Basin. Only parties with accompanying stock animals may reserve this specialized facility.
