Calf Creek Cabin

Open — Open year-round for reservations at $55 per night. From December 1 to May 15, the last 7 miles of Forest Service Road 119 are closed to wheeled vehicles and maintained as a groomed snowmobile trail. Access during winter requires snowmobile, skis, or snowshoes.

About

Calf Creek Cabin is a recently renovated Forest Service rental cabin located along Calf Creek at 5,400 feet elevation in the Little Belt Mountains of Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest. The cabin sits in a dense coniferous forest of mixed fir, spruce, and pine trees, providing a secluded base for outdoor recreation year-round. The cabin sleeps six people and includes a wood stove for heating, firewood, pots, pans, dishes, and limited cleaning supplies. Though no electricity is available, the cabin has electrical outlets that allow guests to hook up a generator. A camper, RV, or slide-in truck camper can be placed at the site to accommodate an additional four people, with a strict maximum of 10 people total. Both the cabin and the outdoor vault toilet are wheelchair accessible. Guests must bring their own water (or filter from the creek), food, toilet paper, bedding, towels, and warm clothing. Recreation opportunities abound in the surrounding area. Calf Creek offers fishing for mountain whitefish, cutthroat, brook, and rainbow trout. Horseback riders and hikers can explore trails north along East Fork Calf Creek to Bubbling Springs in the Tenderfoot Experimental Forest, with a hitching rack available at the cabin. The area provides excellent hunting, OHV riding, and wildlife viewing. Winter visitors enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling on groomed trails. White Sulphur Springs, about an hour south, provides the nearest food and fuel services.

Directions

From White Sulphur Springs, head east on Highway 12 for 3 miles and turn left north on Highway 89. Continue about 15 miles, then head west (left) on Road 119 for 9 miles to the cabin. From Great Falls, head east on Highway 87/89 about 23 miles to the rest area just past Belt. Turn right south onto Highway 89. Go past Monarch and Neihart to Kings Hill Pass (about 75 miles from Great Falls), and down Highway 89 about 13.5 miles past Kings Hill Pass to Road 119 and turn right west. Drive 9 miles to the cabin.
