About
Monument Peak Lookout offers a unique lodging experience in a historic fire lookout originally built in 1936 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Once used to spot forest fires from its original 50-foot tower, the lookout was removed in 1999, restored, and placed on a solid foundation for public rental use. Sitting at 7,395 feet elevation, it provides spectacular 360-degree views of Monument Ridge, Strawberry Ridge, and the surrounding Little Belt Mountains. The rustic cabin sleeps up to 6 people with two beds and mattresses inside, plus space for up to two tents outside. Amenities include a propane cooking stove, two propane lanterns, a table and chairs, and a wood stove for heating. A vault toilet is located approximately 100 feet from the cabin. There is no water, electricity, or plumbing, so guests must bring drinking water, bedding, flashlights, food, small propane cylinders, and firewood. Access requires a high-clearance vehicle for the final 4 miles of rough, rocky road. Bears frequent the area, making mandatory food storage essential. The heavy window shutters typically require two people to operate, and hardhats are provided on-site for safety while opening them.
