About
Butterfly Campground is located at 10,300 feet elevation on the shores of Butterfly Lake, just off the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway in the Uinta Mountains. The campground features 20 sites nestled among white fir trees, providing partial shade and scenic views of the lake's pristine clear waters. Summer wildflowers dot the landscape, and daytime temperatures typically range from 65-75°F with cooler nights dropping to 40-50°F.
The lake is open only to non-motorized watercraft, making it ideal for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. The area provides excellent wildlife viewing opportunities and serves as a gateway to numerous trails for hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The High Uintas Wilderness is accessible from several trailheads along the byway.
The campground offers vault toilets, drinking water, and picnic tables at each site with fire pits. Reservations are available through Recreation.gov. Note that the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway closes seasonally due to heavy snow, typically from November through late May, making the campground inaccessible during winter months.
