About

Buckhorn Recreation Area is located at Black Butte Lake in California's northern Sacramento Valley, about 100 miles north of Sacramento and 30 minutes south of Red Bluff. The lake was formed in 1963 with the completion of Black Butte Dam on Stony Creek and offers 4,460 acres of water surface when levels are high. The surrounding landscape features black basalt buttes and blue oak woodland along 40 miles of shoreline. The campground has 93 sites including standard nonelectric campsites, five walk-in tent sites, and a group camping area. Sites vary in size with driveways ranging from 24 to 65 feet, accommodating everything from tents to large RVs. Amenities include potable water, dump station, a modern boat ramp complex, two playgrounds, and an exercise area. Reservations are available through Recreation.gov. Recreation opportunities abound with wakeboarding, sailing, and fishing for crappie, channel catfish, and largemouth/smallmouth bass. The area offers 13 miles of shoreline trails for hiking, running, and biking. An 18-hole disc golf course is accessible across from nearby Orland Buttes Campground, and horseback riders can use trails at Grizzly Flat and Burris Creek. The Mendocino National Forest lies to the east.
