About
Pines Group Site sits on the northwest shore of Stony Gorge Reservoir, a 139-foot concrete dam completed in 1928 as part of the Orland Project. The lakefront group area accommodates up to 100 people and 50 vehicles, featuring a semi-level natural surface with dispersed picnic tables, a large double group-size BBQ, a stone fire ring with four metal benches, and two horseshoe pits. A locked gate provides exclusive access to a private cove. The reservoir is known for its warm-water fishery, with largemouth and smallmouth bass reaching 10-12 pounds, thriving bluegill and crappie populations of 2-3 pounds, and catfish up to 20 pounds. A boat ramp is located about 1 mile from the campground, though usability depends on water levels. Swimming in the warm waters is popular during summer months. The site is primitive with vault toilets and an ADA-compliant restroom, but no potable water or electricity. Campers must bring their own water supply. The area sits in the foothills adjacent to Mendocino National Forest, with views of the reservoir and surrounding hills. Nearby attractions include the Red Mountain Trail offering 360-degree views of Black Butte Lake, Lassen Peak, and Mount Shasta.
Directions
From Interstate 5, take exit 603 at Willows and head west on Highway 162. Travel approximately 20 miles to the junction with County Road 304. Turn south and continue over two cattle guards for about 2.5 miles. Take the first right at the Stony Gorge Reservoir welcome sign and follow the gravel road approximately 1/4 mile to the locked gate entrance.
