About
Orland Buttes Recreation Area occupies a prime location at Black Butte Lake, situated at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley about 100 miles north of Sacramento and 30 miles south of Red Bluff. The lake was formed in 1963 with the completion of Black Butte Dam on Stony Creek, creating a 4,460-acre reservoir surrounded by black basalt buttes and blue oak woodland along 40 miles of shoreline. The campground features 35 individual campsites with paved driveways and back-in access, plus a group site that accommodates up to 50 people with pull-through access. Recreation options include wakeboarding, sailing, swimming, and warm-water fishing for crappie, channel catfish, and largemouth and smallmouth bass. An 18-hole disc golf course is located within the campground, and the Paul Thomas Trail provides hiking opportunities. Direct lake access from the campground is limited due to steep terrain, but a boat ramp complex serves watercraft. Horseback riders can access trails at nearby Grizzly Flat and Burris Creek, while Buckhorn Recreation Area offers 13 miles of fitness trails for hiking, running, and biking.
