About
Orland Buttes Recreation Area is located on the eastern shore of Black Butte Lake in Glenn County, situated at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley. The campground is positioned 100 miles north of Sacramento and 30 miles south of Red Bluff, making it an accessible destination for water sports and outdoor enthusiasts throughout the region. Black Butte Lake was formed in 1963 with the completion of Black Butte Dam on Stony Creek, creating a 4,460-acre surface area surrounded by 40 miles of shoreline featuring black basalt buttes and blue oak woodland. The family-friendly campground offers 35 individual campsites and one group campground that accommodates up to 50 people. On-site amenities include showers, a boat ramp complex, and an 18-hole disc golf course. The campground does not offer electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites. Direct lake access from the campground is limited due to steep terrain. Gates close at 10 p.m. nightly during the operating season, with quiet hours enforced from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Black Butte Lake is renowned for its warm-water fishing, with popular catches including crappie, channel catfish, and both large and smallmouth bass. The lake is ideal for powerboats and sailboats, with wakeboarding and sailing being popular activities. On land, visitors can explore the Paul Thomas hiking trail or enjoy the disc golf course. Nearby attractions include equestrian trails at Grizzly Flat and Burris Creek, and Buckhorn Recreation Area with 13 miles of fitness trails for hiking, running, and biking.
Directions
From Interstate 5, take the Black Butte Lake exit at Orland. Travel west on County Road 200/Newville Road for 6 miles. Turn left on County Road 206 and drive 4 miles to the campground.
