About
Buchanan State Forest covers over 72,000 acres across Franklin, Fulton, and Bedford Counties in south-central Pennsylvania. Named for the fifteenth President of the United States, the forest offers a true backcountry camping experience with 65 dispersed primitive sites scattered along remote dirt and gravel forest roads. Sites fall into two categories: roadside campsites that accommodate tents, small RVs, or trailers depending on layout, and roadside hike-in sites that are tent-only with designated parking and a trail leading to a more secluded location. There are no developed facilities at individual sites. Four picnic areas throughout the forest provide pavilions, grills, and pit latrines. The forest is popular for hiking, horseback riding, hunting, and fishing. Major long-distance trails including the Mid State Trail, Tuscarora Trail, and Standing Stone Trail pass through, offering backpackers extensive route options. Reservations are required for all motorized roadside campsites and can be made up to 11 months in advance.
