About
Breitenbush Campground is nestled along the banks of its namesake river in the western Oregon Cascades, approximately 10 miles east of Detroit. At 2,100 feet elevation, the campground provides a peaceful retreat where the sound of flowing water fills the air. The Breitenbush River, a tributary of the North Santiam, carries clean snowmelt from the Mount Jefferson Wilderness. The campground offers 29 sites, with 23 available for reservation and the remainder first-come, first-served. Each site features a picnic table and fire pit, with vault toilets and trash receptacles provided. Native plants and foliage create natural screening between sites. Note that potable water is not available as the system was damaged in the Beachie Creek/Lionshead Fire and has not been restored. Wading and fishing for rainbow trout are popular activities in the river. Detroit Lake, a short drive away, offers additional recreation including boating, water skiing, and kayaking. The Willamette National Forest provides access to approximately 1,700 miles of trails for hiking.
Directions
From Detroit, Oregon, at the intersection of Highway 22 and Forest Service Road 46, take Road 46 north and continue 9.3 miles to the campground on the right.
