About

Box Canyon Horse Camp is a primitive equestrian campground in the Willamette National Forest, designed to provide trail access to wilderness and roadless areas west of the Cascade crest. The setting features groves of conifers and scattered meadows that appeal to both hikers and packsaddle enthusiasts. The campground provides basic facilities including vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire pits, along with equestrian-specific amenities such as corrals, stock hitching posts, and a water trough. During summer months, water is piped into the trough for livestock use only. There is no potable drinking water, so campers must bring their own supply. Garbage service is not provided; all trash must be packed out following Leave No Trace principles. The camp is accessed via the Aufderheide Scenic Byway (Forest Road 19). Trailheads here connect to Grasshopper Mountain Trail, McBee Trail, and Chucksney Mountain Trail. Maximum trailer length is 30 feet. Dogs are permitted but must remain on leash at all times.
