About

Box Canyon Horse Camp is a primitive campground specifically developed to provide access for equestrians to both wilderness and undeveloped roadless areas west of the Cascade crest in the Willamette National Forest. Set among groves of conifers and scattered meadows, this appealing location serves both hikers and packsaddle enthusiasts exploring the nearby trail systems. The campground offers basic facilities including tables, vault toilets, and fire pits, along with equestrian-specific amenities such as stock hitching posts, corrals, and a water trough. Water is piped into the trough for stock use during summer months only and is not safe for drinking. No potable water is available at any time. Garbage service is not provided, so campers must follow pack-in pack-out principles and Leave No Trace guidelines. Located at the top of the pass on Forest Service Road 19 (Aufderheide Scenic Byway), the campground provides access to the Grasshopper Mountain Trail, McBee Trail, and Chucksney Mountain Trail, as well as proximity to the Three Sisters Wilderness and Box Canyon Trail Area. The camp is free and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations.
