About
Box Canyon Guard Station sits beneath Douglas fir at 3,620 feet along the West Cascades National Scenic Byway, approximately 75 miles southeast of Eugene. Originally built in 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, it served as a dwelling for fire guards who chased smoke on horseback through the surrounding timber. The cabin offers a historic overnight experience at the doorstep of the Three Sisters Wilderness. The 16x24-foot cabin is furnished with two twin beds with mattresses, a sofa bed, desk, table with chairs, and a wood stove. Cleaning supplies are provided. Outside, guests have access to a vault toilet, fire ring, picnic table, and a horse corral approximately 45 feet in diameter. Water from a nearby stream is available but must be treated before use. Trailheads into the Three Sisters Wilderness and Chucksney Mountain Roadless Area are adjacent to the guard station. The nearby Box Canyon Trail Area offers multi-use trails for mountain bikers, equestrians, and hikers. The surrounding landscape features alpine meadows, waterfalls, lava fields, glaciers, and glacial lakes.
