About

Birches Picnic Area is a day-use facility located 1.9 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon, approximately 15 miles from Salt Lake City. The site features 6 picnic sites, each equipped with a picnic table, campfire ring, and grill. Big Cottonwood Creek runs alongside the area, offering stocked trout fishing popular with local fly-fishermen. The canyon provides access to numerous hiking and mountain biking trailheads, with rock climbing also available in the area. Solitude Mountain Resort is 11.5 miles up-canyon, offering scenic chairlift rides, dining, and an 18-hole disc golf course during summer months. This is a watershed protection area with strict rules: no pets are allowed (service animals only, with $650 fines for violations), and wading or swimming in the creek is prohibited. Visitors must secure all food and trash as the area is bear country.
