Located just 15 miles from Salt Lake City in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Birches Picnic Area offers a convenient escape into nature. This small day-use facility features 6 picnic sites situated alongside Big Cottonwood Creek, each equipped with picnic tables, campfire rings, and grills. Paved pathways throughout the area ensure accessibility for all visitors.
Big Cottonwood Creek runs through the site and is regularly stocked for trout fishing, making it a favorite among local fly-fisherman. The canyon is known for its soaring peaks, pristine hidden lakes, and cascading streams. Summer wildflowers paint the canyon with vivid color beginning in late July, while autumn leaves put on quite a show in late September.
The area serves as an excellent base for exploring Big Cottonwood Canyon's outdoor recreation opportunities. Numerous hiking and mountain biking trails are accessible from nearby trailheads, and rock climbing is popular throughout the canyon. Solitude Mountain Resort is located 11.5 miles up-canyon, offering scenic chairlift rides, hiking, dining options, and a challenging disc golf course.
Directions
Take exit 301 off I-15. Turn east and travel 6 miles on 7200 South to the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Travel 1.9 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon to the picnic area.
