Big Water Yurt
Closed — Closed for the 2025-2026 season due to Mill Creek Canyon road improvements. Yurt reservations are currently unavailable.
About
Big Water Yurt offers a rustic backcountry winter camping experience in Mill Creek Canyon within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Managed by Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation, this seasonal shelter sits at 7,520 feet elevation at the Upper Big Water Trailhead, providing backcountry enthusiasts with a base for exploring the surrounding terrain. The yurt sleeps up to 8 people with two double-bunk beds measuring 4 feet by 7 feet each. Inside, campers will find a wood-burning stove for heat, a table with benches, and basic amenities. A vault toilet is located just outside the yurt, and a nearby creek provides a water source that must be treated. The location provides access to beginner and intermediate backcountry skiing terrain, with routes to Little Water Peak, Big Water Peak, Soldier Peak, and Gobbler's Knob. Access requires a 4.5-mile approach from the Maple Grove winter gate via the Millcreek Ski Trail, accessible only by ski or snowshoe. The yurt typically operates December 1 through April 30, with reservations opening November 1. Visitors should be prepared for winter backcountry conditions and check avalanche forecasts with the Utah Avalanche Center before their trip.
