About

Big Flat Guard Station is a historic ranger station built around 1908, located about 25 miles east of Beaver, Utah in the Fishlake National Forest. The cabin sits in the middle of Big Flat meadow at approximately 10,000 feet elevation, backed by aspen and conifers with an open view of the meadow where deer, elk, and other wildlife are frequently spotted. The three-room cabin includes a kitchen and two bedrooms with one double bed bunk and two sets of bunk beds, sleeping up to 7 people inside. Amenities include a wood stove for heat, a propane single-burner stove for cooking, kitchen table with chairs, dishes, utensils, and cooking pans. Solar-powered lighting provides illumination, but there is no electricity. A vault toilet is adjacent to the cabin, and a fire circle with benches and a picnic table are on the grounds. The area is popular for OHV riding, hiking, biking, horseback riding, and hunting. The Paiute 01 OHV trail passes within 1.5 miles, and the Skyline Rec Trail and Hi Hunt 228 trail are adjacent to the property. City Creek Peak, Delano Peak, and Mt. Holly are visible from the Big Flat area. Puffer Lake, Three Creeks Reservoir, and Labaron Reservoir provide fishing opportunities nearby.

Directions

From Beaver, Utah, take UT-153 east for about 24 miles. About 1 mile after passing the Timid Springs turnoff, turn right onto FR652 into the site. From Junction, Utah, travel west 6 miles on paved UT-153, then approximately 11 miles on the dirt road section of UT-153 to reach Big Flat Guard Station, approximately 2 miles north of Buck Ridge Restroom. A sign marks the entrance; the cabin is tucked in the trees between Timid Springs and the main meadow.
