About
Big Flat Guard Station is a historic three-room cabin originally constructed in 1908, located on the Fishlake National Forest approximately 25 miles east of Beaver, Utah. Perched at 10,000 feet elevation, the cabin sits in the middle of Big Flat meadow, backed by aspen and conifers with open views across the meadow. The rustic station serves as an excellent base camp for recreation activities year-round. The area offers diverse recreational opportunities including OHV riding on the nearby Paiute 01 trail system (1.5 miles away), hiking and biking on trails like the Skyline Recreation Trail and Hi Hunt 228 trail, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, and hunting for elk and deer. Summer visitors can enjoy wildflower viewing and fishing at nearby Puffer Lake, Three Creeks Reservoir, and Labaron Reservoir. Winter brings opportunities for snowmobiling on groomed trails, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Wildlife is abundant, with deer, elk, and other animals frequently visible from the front porch. The high elevation location provides spectacular mountain views of City Creek Peak, Delano Peak, and Mt. Holly. Summer days are warm with cool nights, though guests should be prepared for all types of mountain weather. The station is accessed via UT-153, with the last 2 miles on dirt road after Puffer Lake.
Directions
From Beaver, Utah take UT-153 east for about 24 miles. About 1 mile after passing the Timid Springs turnoff, turn right onto FR652 into the site. The guard station is approximately 2 miles north of Buck Ridge Restroom, tucked away in the trees between Timid Springs and the main meadow in Big Flat area.
