About
North Fork John Day Campground is a primitive Forest Service campground located along the Wild and Scenic North Fork John Day River in Oregon's Umatilla National Forest. Positioned at the junction of the Blue Mountain and Elkhorn Scenic Byways, the campground provides 20 sites: 14 standard tent/RV sites, 5 tent-only sites, and one group site (Site 14). Three accessible vault toilets serve the campground, but there is no potable water or garbage service. The campground functions as the primary eastern portal into the North Fork John Day Wilderness, with the North Fork John Day River Trail #3022 beginning at the north end of the campground. Stock facilities including corrals, mangers, hitching posts, and an unloading ramp make this a popular staging area for backcountry horseback trips. Sites 10-16 are specifically designated for equestrian use. Recreational opportunities include fishing (special state regulations apply), hiking, horseback riding, hunting, and wildlife photography. The historic mining town of Granite lies 9 miles south, and the Sumpter Valley Dredge is accessible 22 miles south. Spring and fall visitors can observe salmon spawning in the river.
