About

Bear Heaven Campground, also known locally as Bear Haven, is a small primitive camping area managed by the U.S. Forest Service in the Monongahela National Forest. Perched on a ridge high on Shavers Mountain, the campground offers a secluded mountain experience with 8 widely spaced sites nestled among rock outcroppings that create distinctive landscapes. The sites are deliberately spread out with natural underbrush providing privacy between them, making this an ideal destination for campers seeking solitude and a truly rustic experience. Each campsite is equipped with basic amenities including a gravel parking spur suitable for vehicles, a picnic table, fire ring, tent pad, and lantern holder. The campground's primitive nature means there are no hookups, showers, or dump stations. Vault toilets serve the camping area. The sites are best suited for tent camping, though small RVs and trailers can access some sites. Located on Forest Road 91 (Stuart Drive) approximately 14 miles northeast of Elkins, the campground sits near the edge of the Otter Creek Wilderness, providing access to backcountry hiking and exploration. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations available through Recreation.gov or other systems. What Bear Heaven lacks in modern amenities, it more than compensates for with its peaceful setting, unique rock formations, and proximity to wilderness areas. This makes it a favorite among self-reliant campers who appreciate primitive camping experiences in the Monongahela National Forest.

Directions

From Elkins, travel east on State Highway 33 for approximately 11 miles to the top of Shavers Mountain. Turn left on Forest Road 91 (Stuart Drive) and follow for approximately 3 miles to the campground.
