About

Bear Heaven Campground is a small, primitive camping area managed by the U.S. Forest Service within the Monongahela National Forest. The 8 single sites are irregularly spaced along unique rock outcroppings that give the campground its distinctive character. Each site includes a gravel parking spur, picnic table, fire ring, tent pad, and lantern holder. A vault toilet serves the campground, but potable water is not available. The campground operates seasonally from mid-April through November, with a nightly fee of $5 per site payable at the campground. All sites are first-come, first-served with no advance reservations. Maximum stay is 14 days with a 1:00 PM checkout. Bear Heaven sits adjacent to the Otter Creek Wilderness, making it an ideal staging area for backcountry exploration. Middle Point Trail #140, a 3.7-mile route, begins along Forest Road 91 west of the campground. Stream fishing opportunities are available nearby. The primitive nature and moderate distance from Elkins make this a quieter option for those seeking solitude.

Directions

From Elkins, travel east on State Highway 33 for approximately 11 miles. Turn left on Forest Road 91 at the summit of Shaver's Mountain. Continue on Forest Road 91 for approximately 3 miles; Bear Heaven Campground will be on the left.
