About
Almanor Campground is a large family-friendly facility on the west shore of Lake Almanor in Lassen National Forest. The campground sits at 4,540 feet elevation within a scenic mixed conifer forest, with some shaded sites and grassy meadows featuring seasonal wildflowers. A boat ramp adjacent to the north campground provides direct lake access, and the nearby beach offers a mix of rocky and sandy shoreline. The 28,000-acre lake is popular for boating, swimming, water skiing, and sailing. Fishing is excellent, with opportunities for rainbow and brown trout, smallmouth bass, king salmon, and catfish in the lake and nearby streams. The Lake Almanor Recreation Trail can be accessed directly from the campground, winding approximately 11 miles along the west shore through forest with views of the lake, Dyer Mountain, and Lassen Peak. The campground includes both Almanor North and Almanor South sections, with a mix of single-family sites, tent-only sites, walk-in sites, and group camping areas. Sites include picnic tables and fire rings with grills. Vault toilets and potable water are provided. The campground is located about 6 miles south of Chester off Highway 89.
Directions
From Chester, take Highway 36 west to Highway 89 South. Turn left on Highway 89 and continue south about 6 miles to Almanor Drive West (across from Almanor Group Camp and rest area). Turn left on Almanor Drive West and continue approximately 1 mile to Almanor South Campground.
