Camp 4 Group Campground is a reservation-only group site situated on the Upper McCloud River in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, one of California's most scenic mountain regions. The campground can accommodate groups of 12-30 people with up to 10 vehicles, 10 tents, and 5 RVs or motorhomes. Primitive amenities include vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and trash collection, but no water or electricity is provided on-site. The Upper McCloud River is the area's main attraction, featuring three stunning waterfalls that cascade over ancient basalt lava flows. The nearby McCloud River Falls Trail provides access to all three falls, with Middle Falls and Lower Falls offering popular swimming holes for those willing to brave the cool mountain waters. The river itself is renowned for trout fishing, with anglers catching rainbow, brook, and the native McCloud River red band trout. During late spring, summer, and early fall, visitors enjoy fishing, swimming, kayaking, hiking, and photography against the backdrop of Mount Shasta. The campground sits at approximately 3,800 feet elevation within the vast 2.1-million-acre Shasta-Trinity National Forest. Vehicle access is mostly paved, with the final quarter-mile on gravel. The nearest services are 9 miles away in the historic mill town of McCloud. Drinking water is available at the McCloud Ranger Station. The campground enforces a 7-night maximum stay and 15-day stay limit.

Directions

From I-5, take the McCloud/Highway 89 exit. Head south on Highway 89 past McCloud toward Reno/Lassen Park. Turn right onto River Loop Road (Fowlers/Lower Falls exit). Travel 0.5 miles and turn left toward Middle and Upper Falls (Forest Service Road 40N44). Continue through the stop sign for 1.5 miles, then turn right at the Camp 4 sign. Continue down the gravel road for 0.5 miles to the campground.
