Fowlers Campground is the most popular campground in the McCloud area of Shasta-Trinity National Forest, located on the Upper McCloud River at 3,400 feet elevation. The campground is nestled in mixed conifer and oak woodland on the east side of Mount Shasta, offering 39 sites with tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and piped drinking water. The campground accommodates tents and mid-sized RVs or trailers with paved parking spurs. The campground's main attraction is its proximity to three spectacular McCloud River waterfalls ranging from 15 to 50 feet in height. A riverside trail from the campground provides access to all three falls via an approximately 3-mile round trip hike. Alternatively, the 12-mile paved McCloud River Loop Road offers vehicle access to Middle Falls and Upper Falls parking lots and overlooks. Swimming is popular at Lower Falls during warm summer days, though there are no lifeguards and currents can be swift. The river offers excellent fishing with no special restrictions on this section. The campground operates on a mixed reservation system with 31 sites reservable through Recreation.gov and 8 sites available first-come, first-served. Black bears occasionally visit the area, and all sites include bear boxes for food storage. A 14-day stay limit applies, and checkout time is 2:00 PM.

Directions

From McCloud, go east on Highway 89 for 5 miles. Look for the Fowlers/Lower Falls sign and turn right. Drive approximately 1 mile, and after crossing the River Loop Road, take the left fork into the campground. The right fork leads to the Lower Falls day use area.
