About

Young Lake South Cabin offers a true wilderness lodging experience on the northern tip of Admiralty Island in the Tongass National Forest. This primitive Pan Abode cedar log cabin sits under a forested canopy of spruce and hemlock at 320 feet elevation, set back 30 feet from the lake. The one-room cabin sleeps up to 6 in wooden bunks and includes a table, benches, cooking counter, and oil stove for heat. An outhouse is located outside. The lake provides excellent fishing for cutthroat trout, dolly varden, and coho salmon. A skiff with oars is provided for guests; small outboard motors under 10 horsepower are permitted per wilderness regulations. The 4.5-mile Admiralty Cove-Young Lake Trail departs from the cabin, connecting to Admiralty Cove Cabin. This is one of two cabins on Young Lake; the other is Young Lake North Cabin. This is bear country. Brown bears and Sitka black-tailed deer frequent the area, with bear activity highest during salmon runs from July through August. The cabin is located in designated Wilderness; helicopter access is prohibited. Weather can delay float plane pickups by 2-5 days, so guests should pack extra supplies.

Directions

Access by float plane only, approximately 20 minutes from Juneau. The cabin is on the southeast end of Young Lake on Admiralty Island. Helicopter access is prohibited in this designated Wilderness area. In fall, winter, and early spring the cabin may be inaccessible due to frozen lake surface. USGS topo map: Juneau A-2.
