About

Florence Lake (East) Cabin offers a unique wilderness lodging experience on the western side of Admiralty Island in the Tongass National Forest. The primitive A-frame cedar log cabin sits 150 feet from a small lakeside beach beneath old-growth forest. It accommodates up to seven people with bunk beds (no mattresses) and a sleeping loft, and includes an oil stove for heating, table and benches, cooking counter with shelves and cupboards, and a broom. An outhouse is located outside. A small fishing boat with oars is provided. Florence Lake offers fishing for rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and northern pike. A primitive 1.2-mile trail at the west end of the lake leads to a saltwater beach where beachcombers may find Japanese fishing floats, shells, and other ocean treasures. The surrounding landscape features dense spruce and hemlock forests, glacier-fed streams, and muskeg openings. Sitka black-tailed deer, bald eagles, waterfowl, and brown bears inhabit the area. Guests must bring their own water (lake water requires treatment), sleeping bags and pads, cooking stove and fuel, #1 fuel oil for the cabin stove, lantern, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, life jackets, and first aid supplies. The lands surrounding the Forest Service property belong to the Shee Atika Corporation; a $25 permit per person (up to 7 days) is required for activities on corporation land, though use of the cabin and lake does not require this permit.

Directions

Access is by float plane only. The cabin is on the east end of Florence Lake on the upper west side of Admiralty Island. It is approximately a 30-minute flight from Juneau. USGS topographic maps: Sitka D-2, D-3.
