About

Florence Lake East Cabin offers a true wilderness experience on Admiralty Island in the Tongass National Forest. This primitive cedar log A-frame cabin sits within 150 feet of a small lakeside beach beneath a canopy of old-growth forest, though much of the surrounding area is private land that has been logged. The cabin accommodates up to seven people with wooden bunks and a sleeping loft, and includes an oil stove for heat, table, benches, cooking counter, and an outhouse. The lake offers excellent fishing for rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and northern pike. A small fishing boat with oars is provided, though guests should bring their own life jackets and may bring a small outboard motor up to 10 horsepower. A primitive 1.2-mile trail at the west end of the lake leads to a saltwater beach where beachcombers can find Japanese fishing floats and other ocean treasures. Brown bears and Sitka black-tailed deer inhabit the area, and bald eagles are frequently spotted. Access is by floatplane only, approximately 30 minutes from Juneau. The lake is typically ice-free from mid-May through November; in fall, winter, and early spring, frozen lake conditions may prevent floatplane access. Guests must bring all supplies including water, food, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, and No. 1 fuel oil for heating. The surrounding lands belong to Shee Atika Corporation and require a separate permit for any activities off Forest Service land.

Directions
