About
Dan Moller Cabin sits at 1,800 feet elevation in the alpine landscape of central Douglas Island, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and evergreen trees. This popular two-level cedar cabin sleeps seven with a double and single bunk downstairs plus four bunks in the upstairs loft. The cabin is equipped with a table, benches, propane wall furnace, wood stove, and an outhouse. Two decks provide views overlooking the valley and mountains toward Admiralty Island. The 3-mile Dan Moller Trail features an 1,800-foot elevation gain through muskeg with partially planked sections that become slippery when wet or frosty. Summer access is by hiking, while winter visitors can use snowmobiles (when snow is at least 12 inches deep), snowshoes, or skis. The trail follows Kowee Creek through wildflower meadows and continues beyond the cabin into the mountains. High avalanche danger exists in winter and early spring. Visitors must bring sleeping bags, pads, cooking stoves, cookware, utensils, food, lighting, and water or treat water from the nearby stream. Propane for the furnace is provided. The cabin serves as a public warming shelter from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wildlife in the area includes black bear, deer, wolves, and grouse. Maximum stay is two consecutive nights, and the cabin is heavily used year-round with very high demand.
