About

Dan Moller Cabin offers a backcountry experience on Douglas Island, just 3.5 miles southwest of Juneau in the Tongass National Forest. The two-level cedar cabin sits at 1,800 feet elevation surrounded by snow-capped peaks and alpine meadows near Kowee Creek. Views from the front deck reveal the dramatic mountain scenery of central Douglas Island. Wildlife in the area includes black bear, deer, grouse, and wolves. The cabin accommodates up to seven people with a double bunk and single bunk downstairs and four single bunks in the sleeping loft. Amenities include a propane wall furnace (propane provided), wood stove, table with benches, covered decks, and an outside pit toilet. Visitors must bring their own sleeping bags, pads, cook stove, cookware, food, water, lantern, toilet paper, garbage bags, and fire extinguisher. Access requires a 3-mile hike along the Dan Moller Trail with an 1,800-foot elevation gain. The partially planked trail passes through muskeg and can be slippery when wet or frosty. In winter, the cabin is popular with skiers and snowshoers, though high avalanche danger exists in winter and early spring. Snowmobile access is permitted only when snow depth exceeds one foot.
