About

Oliver Inlet State Marine Park encompasses 560 acres at the northern end of Seymour Canal on Admiralty Island, a wild landscape accessible only by boat or floatplane from Juneau. The park centers on the Seymour Canal Public Use Cabin, a rustic 14x18-foot structure equipped with wooden sleeping platforms, a kerosene stove with emergency wood backup, picnic table, and fire ring. Two freshwater streams near the cabin provide water that must be purified before use. Reaching the cabin requires flying or boating to Oliver Inlet, then using a hand-powered tramcar along a three-quarter-mile tram to portage gear across to Seymour Canal. The area is renowned for having the world's greatest known concentration of nesting bald eagles, and the canal supports year-round populations of seals, sea lions, and whales. Brown bears are abundant here, and visitors must exercise proper bear-country precautions. Summer temperatures range from 55-70°F with high humidity and frequent rainfall. Activities include fishing, kayaking, hiking, wildlife viewing, and beachcombing. The remote setting and exceptional wildlife make this an exceptional destination for experienced wilderness travelers seeking solitude.

Directions

Access is by boat or floatplane only. Fly 23 miles south from Juneau to Oliver Inlet, or boat 19 miles south to Oliver Inlet (minimum 10-foot tide required for motorboat access). From Oliver Inlet, use the hand-powered tramcar to portage gear three-quarters of a mile across to Seymour Canal and the cabin.
