About
Kathleen Lake Cabin offers a unique wilderness lodging experience on the western section of Admiralty Island in the Tongass National Forest. This primitive, pre-cut cedar A-frame log cabin sits on level ground within steps of a small beach on Kathleen Lake, beneath a canopy of old-growth trees. The cabin accommodates up to six people with wooden bunkbeds and a sleeping loft. Amenities include a table, benches, cooking counters, an oil stove for heat, and an outside pit toilet. A skiff with oars is available for exploring the lake. Access to the cabin is exclusively by floatplane, approximately 30 minutes from Juneau. The lake is normally ice-free from mid-May through November, but may be inaccessible during fall, winter, and early spring when the lake surface freezes. Visitors must be self-sufficient, bringing their own #1 fuel oil, sleeping gear, cooking equipment, food, water treatment, and all personal supplies. The area provides excellent fishing opportunities for rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and northern pike. Wildlife is abundant, including brown bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, bald eagles, and migratory waterfowl. The surrounding landscape features dense spruce and hemlock forests, glacier-fed streams, and muskeg, with glacier-capped peaks visible in the distance. Much of the surrounding area is private Shee Atika Corporation land that has been clearcut, creating a patchwork pattern around the cabin. A permit from Shee Atika Corporation is required for activities on corporation lands beyond the immediate Forest Service property.
