About

Windfall Harbor Shelter is a historic three-sided Adirondack-style shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, measuring 12' x 10' with a dirt floor. Located in the Kootznoowoo Wilderness within Admiralty Island National Monument, the shelter sits in one of the most remote and pristine areas of the Tongass National Forest. The shelter provides basic overnight accommodation for backcountry travelers visiting this roadless wilderness. Windfall Harbor offers the nearest sheltered anchorage to Pack Creek Bear Viewing Area, making it a strategic staging point for bear viewing trips. Navigation north or east of Windfall Island is not recommended; the best route to Pack Creek is the channel between Staunch Point and Late Point. This is a primitive facility with no restrooms and no potable water. Visitors must be fully self-sufficient, bringing all water, food, and supplies. All food must be stored in bear-resistant containers or hung properly, as this is prime brown bear habitat. The shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations required and no fee.

Directions

Access is by boat, kayak, or floatplane only. There is no road access. Windfall Harbor offers sheltered anchorage. The best route to Pack Creek from Windfall Harbor is through the channel between Staunch Point and Late Point. Flight time from Juneau is approximately 25-30 minutes.
